Intel - 6600 or 4590?

Go to solution Solved by Enderman,

i5 6600: $229.99

i5 4590: $179.99

#1: i7's cost like $350+

#2: I don't need an i7.

4590 then

the 6600 is not $50 better

Hey everyone

So I'm thinking about getting a new processor and it came down to this. Should I get the all new Core i5 6600? Or should I get the slightly older Core i5 4590?

My current specs:

CPU: AMD A10-6800k

Mobo: Gigabyte GA-F2A78M-D3H

GPU: AMD Radeon R9 280 (Sapphire)

PSU: Corsair CX500

Case: Corsair SPEC-02

HDD: WD Blue 1TB

I do not plan on overclocking and will most likely get a new PSU with either one of these processors.

UPDATE: CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO

PC: AMD Ryzen 5 1600 @ 3.8GHz | EVGA RTX 2060 SUPER | MSI B350 Gaming Pro Carbon | G.Skill Ripjaws V 16GB @ 3200MHz C14 | EVGA G3 650W

Laptop: 2023 Macbook Pro 16" - M2 Max | 64GB RAM | 1TB SSD

Considering you already have DDR3 memory, the i5-4590 may make more sense. The i5-6500 is better, but not by much. In fact, even though the i5-6500 has higher IPC, the i5-4590 has higher clock speeds and boost clock speeds, so the performance difference is negligible.

Assuming you're gaming, save money and get the 4590 or any 1150 i5 for that matter. You're upgrading from a mid-tier APU - there will be a major difference.

Are there any noticeable differences between the i5 4590 and say for example the i5 4440?

Nope.

Yes. Clock  speeds are significantly different. We're talking 3.7 (4590) versus 3.3 (4440) which is 12% different. That can be noticeable in games and is probably worth the difference. Since they're the same architecture, clock speed comparisons are valid. I'd go for the 4590.
