Which PSU would work?

MexicanReeses
Go to solution Solved by quan289,

Thats pretty funny :) I have that cable with me, with what power supplies will that work? The current one I have is 20 pin, so it doesnt work, but will those aforementioned PSUs work with that cable?

And I don't know if you should or not, but I couldnt plug the 20 pin psu cable into the 24 to 8 pin cable.

Oh, you already bought that cable? That ModDIY cable only really rearrange only the wires that's needed on the 24-pin (which is standardized for ATX power supply) to an 8-pin connector that the Dell motherboard uses (the two +12v wire, PWR_OK, PWR_ON, three grounds, and an extra 12v from molex).

Any of the power supplies listed here like the Antec Earthwatt Green 380w (EA-380D) should work and power your system with a GTX 660 : http://www.overclock.net/t/183810/faq-recommended-power-supplies

Hey I need to upgrade my powersupply for work for I can put in a graphics card which I already have. Unfortunately, I'm using a version of the Dell Optiplex 9020 and cannot find out specifics. I can't seem to find what type of motherboard I have for I can check for powersupply compatibility on certain websites.

I'm upgrading to a Twin Frozr GTX 660. The box says it needs a 450W PSU or greater with a minimum 12 V current rating of 24A. It also says one 6-pin PCI Express supplementary power connects.

The old Dell powersupply plugs into the motherboard's 8 pin connector.

Any ideas on what powersupply would be compatible or any information I can find out for you within the computer for you can help me out?

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/361411-upgrading-gpu-on-a-dell-optiplex-9020/ And this guy has the same PC specs I assume:

-Intel Core i7 4790 @ 3.60GHz Haswell 22nm Technology

-Motherboard Dell Inc. 06X1TJ (SOCKET 0)

and the rest is what he used i think,

Is the PC build I have (based on looks)

P.S.: Sorry for being a scrub, but Dell proprietary things scare and confuse me :)

Most likely a normal ATX power supply which most tower PCs use.

But to be sure a picture would be nice.

Name your region, and I'll give you a recommendation. Also, what form factor 9020 is it?

Titan: Intel Core i7-5820K | ASUS X99-A | Crucial Ballistix Sport 4x4GB DDR4-2400 | ASUS Strix GeForce GTX 970 | OCZ Arc 100 2x256GB in RAID 0 | Seagate Barracuda 2x2TB in RAID 1

Honestly it shouldn't be hard to find a compatible PSU. They usually are universal. For your system an EVGA 500B would be fine if you're on a budget but a step up to an Antec high Current Gamer would be a good choice.

Take the picture and email it to yourself, you will be given a choice to choose a lower resolution.  Not super elegant, but it works.

The Dell Optiplex 9020 uses a proprietary power supply, in which a standard ATX power supply will not be compatible.

Edit: Look at where the 24-pin connector should be (45seconds in) :

The OP has a 660 and not a 660 Ti.

Yes I think you are right, I don't know if I should've mentioned it but I ordered a: on amazon which doesnt work so I'm going to return it. It has a 20 pin connector to go into my motherboard which wont work. Currently uploading pictures to imgur (tell me if its not allowed :P) since the email to lower resoluton didn't work with the images on yahoo or gmail

Are there any PSUs which will be compatible? And I'm pretty sure this is the exact current PC I have.

I'm pretty sure no. But here's a solution I had found:

http://www.moddiy.com/products/Dell-OptiPlex-9020-PSU-Main-Power-24%252dPin-to-8%252dPin-Adapter-Cable-%2830cm%29.html?gclid=CNW0s76nrMgCFQemaQodN8AJKw#

I have to go now, so I can't provide a recommendation, but the aforementioned EVGA 500B and Antec HCG-430/520 would be than plenty for such a build.

The graphics card says it needs minimum of 450 W, so Antec Earthwatt Green 380w (EA-380D) won't work I'm pretty sure (maybe will but not under reccomendations). The EVGA500B has 2 6 pin connectors while GFX says it only needs one, but it should still work right since that just means it can support multiple GPUs. I'm thinking either the EVGA500B or the Antec Truepower classic 550W, but I just want to double check compatibility. (Need one 6-pin PCI express, 450w with 12v current rating of 24a. and motherboard is 8 pin for PSU but i have a 24 to 8 pin connector) and i dont know if the 20+4 pin will work the with cable.

The "450w" rating is for power supplies of various of qualities. 450w continuous vs peak; 50C vs 25C; 37A on 12v vs 24A on 12v; etc. Also, that 450w is system recommendation. What kind of system exactly? A Pentium build or an i7-5960X build? I mean the Northwest Falcon Tiki with a Silverstone SFX 450w Gold power an i7-3770K OCed to 4.6GHz with an Titan, even though it calls for a 600w minimum unit.

Your MSI GTX 660 Twin Frozr has shown a power draw of 135DC by itself (power draw measure at the PCIe slot and PEG cable) during Furmark. That's 11.25A on the 12v. Your Dell system would likely not going to experience overclocking and would see a power draw of ~250wDC or so max.

Here's a Seasonic G 450w recommendation (the Antec True Power Classic is based on this platform) for $59.99 with promo or $49.99 after MIR. It's an excellent well-built, DC-DC regulated power supply with 37A on 12v, two PEG cables to power something like the 980, Gold efficiency, 5 year warranty. It's a better build / performing (electrically) unit than the EVGA 500B. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151139&ignorebbr=1

You can get a larger power supply if you want; however, that would mean you would have more excess cables that you need to deal with or it can obstruct airflow in that Dell case. But yeah, that Antec TP-550C and EVGA 500B will work.
