Is it possible/OK to POST without A CPU Cooler?

Go to solution Solved by Lays,

Holy shit so many uninformed people.

Of course you can post without it to make sure it works. Just shut it off after you get to bios.

There are safety features built in to prevent damage and overheating.

Hi! I'm building a computer with a 5930K Hasswell-E processor and as I'm sure many of you know it doesn't come with a stock cooler. Since the build is water-cooled I want to make sure all my components are working properly before I remove the heatsinks on the GPUs and create my loop. Should I go out and purchase a CPU cooler (waste of money) or can it handle POSTing without one.

as long as you switch it immediately off again it may work but it's risky

Yes you can post without a cooler.  If you don't have one then just use a case fan to temporary blow on it.

you CAN post but dont do it for long, it will shutdown automaticly but try to turn it of as fast as you can, also you cold just use a desk fan or something for cooling it for the first post but it is risky

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

No, you do not use need a CPU cooler in order to see if your PC posts. I have a custom water cooling loop in my build, with a 5820k, and I didn't use a cooler to check if it posted at first. Your socket does get pretty hot, but there's virtually no danger unless you actually try to perform tasks without a cooler.

I post'd the other day and then realised my fan wasn't spinning on the cpu cooler, it was OK after I immediately shut down and tried again.

You should at least ghetto-mount SOMETHING on top to dissipate/absorb the heat. If you have an old PC lying around, tie strap it's heatsink on. Maybe attach the waterblock with no water through it and no tubing, that should keep you for 30 seconds ish, maybe more but I wouldn't push it past 30 seconds if i were you. I've heard of people putting a drinking glass on top of the CPU, with a bit of ice in it (covered, of course, so it doesn't spill).
