New 4790k overheating with H80i GT

Go to solution Solved by TDP_Equinox,

Hi!

No, for the most part, everything seems to be running smoothly. I got scared because of P95 stressing my 4790k out very quickly. Apparently Haswell is not optimal for those AVX-based stability tests...

Mark the topic as solved.

I just finished my system overhaul. I replaced my Sabertooth Z77 and 3770k with a Maximus VII Formula, 4790k, and H80i GT. The installation went pretty well. I finished In a few hours and did some good cable management. Everything looks great. More so, Windows 7 seems to be working, despite the massive system changes. However, the temperatures on the 4790k are scary. Very scary. In the Uefi, the CPU temps are reported at 85-88c. Using Realtemp, the reported temps were around 98c on the hottest core. I believe I seated the CPU block correctly. It seemed snug, and the thumbscrews were tight. I did struggle a bit balancing the rad and block whilst installing them, but I did seem to do it correctly. I used the pre-applied thermal paste on the CPU block. I did not connect the Corsair Link header, so I cannot verify the rpms. However, the fan rpms seem pretty low. I'm using a Noctua NF-F12 IPPC in the rear of the 120mm rad, and one of the included Corsair fans in the front of the H80i GT. Could low rpms, like say, less than 1000 rpm bring temps on the CPU so unrealistically high like this? I've never used an AIO before so I am unaware of the direct influence fan rpms have on CPU temps and rad performance. Is the cause of these high 90-ish Celsius range temps low rpms, or something different?? In addition, using Realtemp in Windows, the 4790k is throttling itself to hell, yet still bracing at near 100c after booting.

I do not have Corsair Link, so I cannot know for sure. I do know that both fans seem to be running at low RPMs. The corsair fan by default is supposed to run at around 2400 rpm, but it obviously isn't. I would guess it is running at 500-600 rpm. It is pretty quiet, and those SP fans apparently aren't supposed to be that quiet...

AiO not working right?

Remount it. And make sure there's no sticker on the block and that it has thermal paste.

I reseated the H80i GT.

Damn, you were right!

A good 1/4 of the 4790k was not covered. The pre-applied TIM was still on the copper base of the block. Basically, it was making almost no contact with the CPU. This was the cause of those insane temps.

My temps are now idling in the late-30c range. It is not ideal, but I also need to adjust the RPMs of the fans later. They are running pretty low. If I increase both to 2000 RPM, I'll get idles in the 20s in all likelihood. I haven't tested load yet, but probably in the 60s I can estimate. Definitely a huge improvement from before.

I was out of MX-4, so I just slapped on some a tube of unopened Noctua NT-T1 or whatever it's called.

I'll post pictures later. Maybe I'll set up Corsair Link too.

Usually when someone has a problem with stupidly high temps using an AiO it's because it wasn't mounted properly. But it's working now and that's all that matters. :)

I just returned a corsair gtx cooler. I thought it sucked... I am back to using my h80i (old one). Make sure the fasteners are tighten all the way. And listen for pump noise.

Yeah. I did install Corsair Link cable and software.

I put the fan speed mode at "Performance".

Idles low 30s.

However, I fired up P95 Small ffts and the CPU hit 90c instantly and began throttling to 3.0 GHz.

Blend is better...late 70c.

That is far worse than my old NH-U14S.

It is fairly acceptable performance, but a significant downgrade. Is there anything else I can do?

According to Corsair Link, the "H80i GT Cooler Fan" is at 0 RPM and is flashing red. The same goes with the Pump and H80i GT cooler temp.

What does this mean? At least one of the fans I installed to the rad are running??

Also, one of my top mounted NF-F12s turns off a few minutes after booting. Why is this??

I did away with Corsair Link.

Installed another Noctua IPPC NF-F12 to the rad. Temps are better now that are attached the fans to a Noctua splitter and inserted them into an actual fan header.

They are actually pretty good now. Idle...27-28c (I judge from the second-hottest core after around five minutes - just as Linus does/used to do).

Load is more complicated. I saw a peak of around 71c in the physics test of 3Dmark Firestrike. Is that fairly normal for an H80i/H80i GT?

However, the rest of the benchmark generally scored lower than 55c. Not too bad for a synthetic benchmark.

Intel Burn Test and P95 still destroy my 4790k. There is absolutely no way I am touching them in the near future. I would be concerned to even let it butcher my bloody brand-new 4790k for a mere few minutes. It destroys Haswell in temps. From what I hear, it is pretty universal for Haswell and Devil's Canyon CPUs. AVX causes ridiculously high temps on Haswell/Haswell Refresh.

Do my temps seem acceptable for a 4790k and an H80i GT now? I have the two NF-F12s running at 2000 RPM pretty consistently, which is to be expected considering my H80i GT is an AIO.

Also, in 3Dmark Firestrike, my boost clock seems to be finicky. Normally I would expect it to read "4.4 GHz", but instead, it reads "800" or "1000" MHz. I also experienced this on my Sabertooth Z77 - i7-2700k and 3770k based platform. I solved it on Z77. It was usually related to DRAM settings (XMP would hold my turbo speed back on my now retired 3770k).

However, this isn't the case here. Is it simply a bug that I shouldn't worry about? I verified in the Firestrike GHz frequency tab. I was pretty much at 4.399 GHz the entire benchmark. Is this normal as well? The 4790k has a boost of 4.4 GHz. Is it normal for it to boost fully at 4.399?? (I have seen it reach 4.410 GHz before though). I have power saving set to "Normal" in the ROG Uefi.

So what, PM him??

Temps aren't bad. Sitting at 26c on the second hottest core (Core #0).

I get up to 4.4GHz boost, so no idea why 3Dmark Firestrike said I attained much lower than that: http://www.3dmark.com/fs/4650437

It does not seem to affect scores though. My 4790k boosts as it should...

No, for the most part, everything seems to be running smoothly. I got scared because of P95 stressing my 4790k out very quickly. Apparently Haswell is not optimal for those AVX-based stability tests...
