Softboxes vs LED Panels

Go to solution Solved by Bsmith,

Because I am doing video work and because the light panels are more convenient would you say the ones I linked in the original comment/post good enough and sufficient for on table reviews ?!?

Thanks

with both the panels equipped with the diffusers which are included you should theoretically get a pretty equal, not to hard light.

although you need to adopt the positioning to your situation along with the use of the earlier mentioned filters and if needed a reflector( shower curtain, paper or a shiny cardboard piece might do) should give you a ideal light condition in my (very tired) eyes.

although you need to keep in mind that light moves as a wave and particle, meaning it basically will be affecting your scene with every little change.

(if more questions don't be afraid to ask altough im going to sleep, so it might take a while for me to answer again.)

Need to invest in some proper video lighting for video production and am looking at 2 main products:

These Softboxes:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Continuous-Lighting-Softboxes-Adustable-Bulbs-Photography/dp/B008N757H8/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

And These Light Panels:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Neewer-Photography-Lighting-including-Camcorder/dp/B00LVTZH9I/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1426886125&sr=8-3&keywords=video+lights

Help me with which if choose if possible!

Thanks,

James!

For photography, softboxes will be much better. Light panels are meant for scene illumination for videos. But personally I just use clamshell lighting if I'm in a hurry and need a small rig.

The projects never end in my line of work.

If you're doing video be careful of LED ad some have pulse module controller and will flicker in video. Go with Voltage controller instead, it will eat more power but won't have any flickering

softbox for photography.

panels for video.

because for photography you are more likely to be influenced by direct light and with video you need to keep everything(direct and indirect light) in mind when setting up your scene, one light can already give a very different feeling to a scene, just like the camera position.

as you can see in the video below a light reflection can already do a lot.

(note its a cheap/getho solution to professional stuff, its purely reference material)

May the light have your back and your ISO low.

well, when you have limited space, as example only 1 or 2 lights directly infront of you, then you are quickly forced due to space limit, but if you have the room a reflected light will look softer and more natural

If I do go for the panel option do you reckon the set I linked above are powerful enough? And whats this about light flicker?!?!?

Thanks! :P

Softboxes would be much nicer! I do a lot of photography work and softboxes give a lot more even lighting on faces compared to bare lights. Bare light will give you very harsh light and give very harsh shadows because of this.
