Planning to clean very old ps3

Castdeath97
Go to solution Solved by GuruMeditationError,

Add new thermal paste.

Be careful of the ribbon cable latches, they're very delicate and if you break one then that's about it for the PS3.

If you're opening it you might want to take the opportunity to switch the fan and the power supply to the more efficient versions (you can get them on eBay). It wouldn't hurt also to mod it with side fan.

Keep it stood up, laying it down makes it run much hotter due to what laying it down does to the airflow.

Basically just run a few searches and you should be able to find all the info. through google but as I say, take care with the ribbon cable latches and change the thermal paste (it almost certainly needs changing by now).

If it's backwards compatible buy Stunt GP and play it with the camera pulled right back (it's a little tough to get into but it's totally worth it). Any Dreamcast owners reading this last bit, it's like a slideshow on the Dreamcast (I know) :0/

So our old and trusty ps3 is still going on and I want to make sure it keeps up as I want to keep playing the older games I bought. Judging by the apparent lack of proper dust filtering it's probably full of dust that I'll need to blow off. So any tips, guides and useful information you guys can provide me with so I can get to do this.

Forgot to include the model, it's the fat 80 GB model.

Is it the original FAT one or the SLIM one?

I believe the slim is a bit harder to open up and the fat is a bit easier.

I guess you are gonna need/want some canned air and blow it all out.

Saw a video of someone building a PC in a PS3 fat, maybe he has some tips in there.

Will link it in a minute.

EDIT: He doesn't show how to open it up and clean it, nvm.

The fatty one

I would suggest just looking up some YouTube videos on it and @lutewan 's link is superb as well!

Well then, I can only hope I don't meet any spiders during the teardown. Is there any specific component I need to worry about not damaging.

So, now I'll have to look for a good thermal paste and canned air, any recommendations on the thermal paste.

I use Arctic Cooling MX-2 purely because it's a very good performance thermal paste and where I am it's always been a good value. There prabably are better pastes but the difference is very slight and not worth paying the extra for (in my opinion). Arctic Cooling MX-4 spreads much more easily, it kind of crushes onto the surface whereas the MX-2 is more like a paste and can be difficult to spread without wiping it back up again, but MX-4 is more expensive.

I know a lot of people use Arctic Silver and while I'd generally say go for the better value, when it comes to the PS3, if you can get a little tube of the best thing on the market then it might be worth it since it's best to do everything you can to stop it ylodin'g.

Get a large piece of cardboard. Draw an outline of the console on it and shove the screws into the cardboard in their corresponding locations.

That way you don't lose the screws and also know exactly where they go when you put it back together.
