Modem/Router for Less then 100 CAD?

Jerakl
Go to solution Solved by dalekphalm,

So if I bought something like what you linked

http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=27_1059_358&item_id=024298

and for the router something like

http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX37448

Yep, both of those are great choices.

Just an FYI, I looked up that router on Canada Computers, and it's about $20 cheaper there compared to Memory Express, in case that would be helpful:

http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=27_1046_1047&item_id=044938

It's on sale, but the sale ends on December 22nd, looks like.

So right now we're using the bottom of the barrel modem/router that Telus gave us.

So my question is, are there any good modems/routers for under 100$ that are good for the following;

-gaming

-web browsing

-uploading content

thanks :)

If you need more info feel free to ask.

BTW, with a 15/1 connection one should be able to watch netflix and play a game at the same time with minimal lag for both users correct?

Someone told Luke and Linus at CES 2017 to "Unban the legend known as Jerakl" and that's about all I've got going for me. (It didn't work)

I have the same connection speeds. We can have multiple people watching Netflix at the same time, so you should be able to Netflix and game at the same time.

Are you using an ADSL modem/router combo? Cable/Fiber?

BTW, with a 15/1 connection one should be able to watch netflix and play a game at the same time with minimal lag for both users correct?

A 15/1 connection's bandwidth is sufficient for Netflix and gaming at the same time, provided your connection has a relatively low latency. For video streaming this shouldn't matter too much though.

The thing is. If I'm playing a game I have lets say, 50 ping on (BF4) and they start watching netflix, it rockets up to ~150-200.

I don't know a ton about networking. All I know is we have DSL. Whatever we have is the Actiontec V1000H

One alternative to using getting a new modem router is to get only a router and have that connected to your other devices. This way you'll be able to set up QoS to prioritize game traffic over regular streaming.

Do you need gigabit for your local network?

Since you're on Telus, and have a 15/1 connection, that means you're using ADSL2+.

You have a couple of options.

Option 1. - Modem/Router Combo Box:

Le Cheapo option:

http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=27_1059_1060&item_id=052561

Wireless N wifi - 2.4 GHz only

Great choice if all your devices are 2.4 GHz anyway, and you don't care about future upgradability to 5 GHz N or AC.

Le Max'd Budget option:

http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=27_1059_1060&item_id=065693

Wireless N dual band wifi - 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz - simultaneous (Meaning you don't have to choose between which frequency)

Great choice if you want a much more well rounded setup but still want a single combo device.

Option 2. - Separate Modem and Routers

http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=27_1059_358&item_id=024298

TP Link ADSL2+ modem. Dirt cheap, works great.

Pair with whatever router you'd like within your budget.

Either way, you likely won't be getting Wireless AC unless you find a Router on sale for stupid cheap.

I highly suggest Option 2, as you can get a much better router for the price (You've got about $75 to spend on a router with Option 2), and you have greater control and upgradability.

For Sale: Meraki Bundle

iPhone Xr 128 GB Product Red - HP Spectre x360 13" (i5 - 8 GB RAM - 256 GB SSD) - HP ZBook 15v G5 15" (i7-8850H - 16 GB RAM - 512 GB SSD - NVIDIA Quadro P600)

Well where I am 25/5 is only 5$ more monthly (yes even after 6 months). So I told my father (who pays for this) I would pay him 5$/mo if he upgrades to that.

With the somewhat trivial info out of the way

I'll take a look at these!

My main concern is that it doesn't make my ping go up too much when someone is watching netflix. I've heard many people say that they have 0 problems with their ping going up in games when someone else is watching netflix. (Like I'm seeing 35K+ ms ping times).

Nvm the part about memexpress. They have like 0 networking gear from what I can tell.

clicked on the wrong tab. They don't seem to have option 2 there.

If you're thinking about upgrading to 25/5, that's likely going to be on a VDSL line, which would require a more expensive modem. Just keep that in mind. You could still use the modems I listed, but your upload speed would be capped at 1Mbps, and your download speed may cap anywhere between 16 and 24 Mbps (Depends exactly on how they setup their VDSL channels).

That's a great router. Highly recommended. I've personally used the AC version of it, and the GUI is quite excellent... But it is just a router. You'd still need to pair it with a Modem. However, you could pair it with that TP-Link modem I linked that was like $22. That'd be a great combination for your current speed package. And the ASUS router itself would still be great if you upgraded to a better speed package later.

So the modem is what translates the signal coming through the cable and the router is the thing that provides you internet?

As I said, I know like 0 about networking.

From what I can tell though, a router needs to be connected to a modem yes?

The modem is what translates the "Phone Line" into an ethernet signal. It's the bridge between your internal network, and the internet.

The router is what controls your internet network, and allows it communicate with an exterior network.

You need both (Although a modem can work by itself with a single device. Any "modem" that work with multiple devices simply have an internal router built in).

The router does not provide Internet at all, and a router can work without an Internet connection (Say, you're hosting a LAN party with games that have local multiplayer - no internet would be required).

The internet cannot work without a modem, and a modem does not do anything without the internet.

In 99% of cases (yours included), a router must either be connected to a modem, or built into a modem. The "combo devices" that I linked up above are examples of a Modem and Router built into the same box.

We currently have a combo device.

I'm guessing the quality of the modem doesn't matter as much as the router?

Because all the modems I've seen are much cheaper then a router.

Modems are generally much cheaper, because they have a specific and limited set of features.

The modem does matter to some degree, but there are a lot more good modems, then bad ones.

Any modem by TP-Link, Speedstream, or Thompson, are generally going to be good and reliable.

Routers have much more variation in quality - in part simply because there are so many more options.

Never cheap out on a Router. It will bite you in the ass sooner or later :P
