New HDD. Making Sound.

MrDuJeR
Go to solution Solved by Captain_WD,

Thanks a lot for this. I was worried that its the sound of the drive going bad.

I would still run the tests, though, to check if the drive is working properly, just in case. There may be something wrong with it cased by transportation.
High vibrations and excessive sound can also be caused by bad mounting or if something is touching the HDD while working (a cable i.e.).

that's just the HDD platter moving about normally, i get it on one of my HDD's as well its nothing to worry about.

Just bought a new WD 2tb black and its making this crackling noise is that normal?

Here is a recording of the sound:

Might have to turn the volume up a bit to hear.

Hey MrDuJeR,

Those are normal seeking sounds. Being a high performance drive, WD Black tends to be a bit louder than the rest of the WD line. :)
If you want to make sure the drive is healthy, I would suggest running WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool and do both tests to check the drive's S.M.A.R.T. status as well as for any bad sectors. Here's a link: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=w34Y1X.

I have (2) 1TB WD blacks, older and newer and I can't hear either one unless I get my ear really close. I really don't think that yours should be making that much noise either.

That's when the drive is in seeking mode and is using 100% of its capacity. It's normal for it to be a bit louder during those times. But, if you decide it's a bit too loud, I would suggest to check the drive for errors and go for an RMA procedure. :)
