I need a new keyboard, and VERY picky

Go to solution Solved by STRMfrmXMN,

Basically the cheap 10$ keyboards i've been using all this time > 100$ fancy key keyboards with those plutonium plastic glues inside of them?

Well, no. Cherry switches are made with EXTREME care, I mean, EXTREME care.

+1 for tech syndicate!

All those switches look like they have so much flimsy small parts that break; I'll stick to my plastic ones that last forever.

Note: the only key that's "Broken" is my space bar's "spring" I think (Sometimes the space bar doesn't come all the way up so i have to double tap or it)

Those switches are made of German engineering. Not gonna break anytime soon. It's a one-in-a-million occurrence that a Cherry switch itself actually fails.

And if your space bar isn't springing up anymore, it's probably not latched on properly and just needs a re-seat of the key.

EDIT: I GTG but keep on responding and I'll keep getting back to ya!

Edit: Ordered the keyboard, seems like it's basically the same as my old one but with a blue led (doesn't matter). Thanks for all your help!

Edit: Most likely going with this one:

Hello, my current keyboards space button is giving out after a few years and well I need a new one; so I'm here for help.

A bit of info about me and my peripherals:

I hate "fancy" mice/keyboards! I use 10$ logitech mice and 10$ "ibuypower" keyboards and feel like i'm in heaven; I've tried every razer product and it just feels "off".

The "clacking" sound, the simplicity, the feeling of the fat keys (I hate those "flat" keyboards).

Must be wired! I do not need to deal with batteries and all that crap! I'm on a desktop!

> Colors and back-lights don't really matter, under my desk is a little rack and on that rack is both my keyboard and mouse -- I don't see my keyboard 99% of the time since it's hidden (I don't need to look at it to use it)

Any color/lighting feature will only be a waste

Again; yes I have tried every "fancy" product out there, including the simplest of them all, and still don't get the level of comfort of these products.

Mouse I use:

Logitech Mouse M100

http://www.logitech.com/en-us/product/mouse-m100?crid=7 )

I've used one for about half a decade, then the USB cord got some broken copper wires inside, so ordered another one recently; no mouse can ever replace the M100!

Keyboard:

"IBuyPower Slim"

My photo:

hRwaba2.jpg

Some video I found on youtube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4K6ZEhxGkw )

It's a 10$ keyboard that came with an ibuypower machine I bought a few years back, it's just a basic keyboard with colors, reminds me of "old" basic dell keyboards (ohh I love them too)

Now that we got a few things sorted out:

1) Would these count as "mechanical keyboards"? I hate the keyboards where every key is "flat" and you can slide your hand across it. I just want to know how to categorize my perfected keyboard.

I've tried to buy a keyboard, but there are just so many options from the type of plastic under the keys, hell I don't give a damn about any of that. I've played wow for almost a decade, had over 20 keybindings, and never had an issue. I do not need "super persist, plutonium grade plastic under the keys, with illuminated lights"

2) What would you guys suggest? I don't want something that's 200$, also something that doesn't have "Planned Obsoletion" as a feature. My friends "basic" Razer keyboard broke 2-3 times in 1 year (key fell off here and there), and had to send it back. Only thing that happens to my 10$ keyboards is the letters scrape off on frequent keys (I don't need letters on my keyboard anyway).

> I don't want it to break in 3 weeks. I've had this keyboard for a LONG time, and the only part that's broken is the space bar spring; I need a new one -- but I can live with it for a bit.

> It has to fit my "comfort zone"

I wan't to get something new, but if there is nothing out there, i'll just get another 10$ keyboard and be happy for half a decade ^_^

Thanks!

p.s: could not find keyboard section.

My HP membrane keyboard actually sounds pretty clacky and it's not flat, its curved for every key, even my spacebar. I love it honestly. It's lasted about 8 years of abuse. Only thing is it's PS/2 which is still good.

Oh god the keyboard info hurts my eyes.

Why don't people write like this for gpu and cpu...

What do you mean?

Have you ever tried the Corsair K70/K95?  They come with mechanical key switches (red, brown, blue, etc.) and other features as well.

I have a K70 w/Cherry MX Browns and I love it to death.

@marat569, here's a link that may help. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=hp+membrane+keyboard&_from=R40|R40&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xhp+9109+keyboard&_nkw=hp+9109+keyboard&_sacat=0 For some reason, buy these keyboards at your own risk. I have these exact same keyboards at school, but they are utter shit. They feel super mushy and are not clacky. I think mine is a one of a kind for its clackyness.

Well most posts I have seen asking for gpu or cpu suggestion just have one line, and we have to ask what they need to use it for and what are there preferences. Tis post is lot better but sadly I know nothing bout keyboards.

Is the "Flap" on the bottom of the keyboard removable? The one that's like a little slope? I hate those! I've been looking on newegg for keyboards in the 25-50$ range and got some cool results.

The mouse is complete crap, but the keyboard looks nice (and cheap)

1) Broken link

2) After a 12$ gluegun got lost in the mail, I refuse to do business with feebay [shipping said delivered, I did not get it, and did not get my money back or another one sent out]

3) New egg premier would be awesome (Free shipping)

This is out of stock right now, but I would recommend you the Monoprice CherryMX Blue keyboard: http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=114&cp_id=11401&cs_id=1140102&p_id=9433&seq=1&format=2

It goes for about $50-$60 and I've had mine for about 1-2 years now and it's still going strong and doesn't show any signs of age except for some of the keys getting "glossy" from finger oils, which pretty much happens on all keyboards.

For $60 you can't really go wrong, it is rather "clicky" due to the key mechanisms. Monoprice is in the U.S. and I don't know if you live in the U.S. yourself, if you do then great if not then it'll probably cost a decent amount of money to ship it overseas(guessing here).

Really, if you want to try a HP keyboard (the one I have), you have no other choice than ebay. plus, they're like 10 bucks, so if you aren't satisfied, trash it or sell it again.

I don't like dealing with shipping and all that, I just want to get another keyboard and forget it exists for a few years.

Thank you for the responses, and please newegg links; if it's not on newegg premier I won't buy it {Take advantage of my account}

The wrist rest is removable.  Corsair products command a premium but they have outstanding build quality if you are willing to pay the premium.  I myself don't have the keyboard (planning on getting it) but based on all the positive feedback on this keyboard, I think you would be right at home with it.

Honestly, that keyboard is great for a rubber-domer and that mouse (which I actually tried for the first time today) wasn't half bad either considering the price. It's a good deal for anybody looking at rubber dome gaming keyboards. The mouse is a great claw grip mouse if you hold your mouse like such. Palm would be a little harder though. Your M100 would be fine for palm if that's your thing.

Also, if you need $200 for a keyboard and mouse and you like rubber dome + cheap mice like yours, the Logitech G100S is basically a better version of your mouse and the Corsair K30 is a solid rubber dome that's gorgeous and easy to keep clean. You're well under $200 at this point.

What is a "Rubber-Domer", is that the keyboards that I use? I tried those gaming mouses before, and the buttons and the feel don't feel right when you compare it to the nice, smooth, simple, M100; but thanks for the feedback! 100$ for a keyboard/mouse is a bit I'm not too fond of!

Edit: That mouse does look sexy; it actually might be the first mouse I like; /bookmark!

Rubber-domer - switch used under the key cap. Generic switch that's cheap to make, lasts awhile and is super common. Seen in cheap desktop keyboards like that iBuyPower one above.

If you want mechanical, well, check out my thread on all the switches. http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/255051-what-key-switch-should-i-get-look-here/

I've read so much complaints, having to ship keyboards back, the process, and i'm here like "I got a 10$ keyboard and it gets the job done; wtf is this nonsense"

I would go to the nearest tech shop and say "Give me the cheapest USB keyboard" and be happy!

What I ordered: Will it fit my "comfort standard" or no?

Btw thanks for all the info!
