Speedtest speeds dont match with speeds I get.

SuspiciousBadger
Go to solution Solved by Forcebreaker,

it's the difference between megabits (Mb) and megabytes (MB), the speedtest shows results in megabits which equals to 2.5~MB/s, the speed you are getting.

Hi guys,

Whenever I go to speedtest.net and do a test it says I have a download speed of 20mb/s and upload of 5mb/s. But whenever I use my internet I never get any higher than 2mb/s. Yes I do disable the download cap in steam. It also says I have 20 ping but I always have more than 30.

Its very annoying because downloading stuff takes forever.

Please help!

I'm guessing you meant "Mbps" not "MB/s"? ;)

depends on the location of the server....

Speedtest will connect to the closest server to you thus allowing max throughput.

Say you want to connect to a site/host that is only in the US, you will then have massive ping and also be fighting for bandwidth with all the other traffic heading that way...

Although from 20 to 2 is a bit extreme it is not unheard of.

Edit: From steam, yes listen to everyone else... Different metric.

Speedtest shows speeds in megabts/second, Steam uses megaBYTES/second. One MB/s = 8 Mb/s. 20 / 8 = 2.5. As for ping, it gets lower as you get closer to the server. Speedtest picks the nearest server, so you get minimal ping and maximum bandwidth. In the real world though, you aren't that close to the server.
