So I just found out that folding@home has been running in the background for ages...

Go to solution Solved by tobben,

manually pause the folding slots

finish them or set the client to idle.

whatever you feel like.

if you are not going to fold for a long time

the best practice would be to finish the wu's and stop the client.

to prevent folding from automatically launching at startup do this:

windows/home button + r

This will bring up a small box called run.

type msconfig and click ok.

This will bring up another box with more options.

go to the startup tab, find folding@home, untick the box and click use.

This is basically applies to any program you are allowed to intervene with.

So a while ago I hit 1 million points and I though, "it is getting hotter, I should probably stop folding until after summer" so I thought I did, but apparently it has been running without me telling it to!

I only just found out then because I kept crashing in Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 when I was 1v1ing @melias24 (I was kicking his arse) and he said is your GPU overheating? so I installed NZXT Cam and found out that F@H was using most of it! That would explain it. So I launched it and realised that I had gained nearly a million points

So I guess that is kinda cool.

The point of this post:

Is this a bug, or am I just to stpudi to realise that I had to disable it every time I hop on my PC. Is there a way to stop it from folding as soon as I start up my PC?

Thanks :D

I looked in folding@home and there's no option for it - but there is an option to start it manually during the installation process.

Not even in the installer? It'll give you the option to start it manually.

I will uninstall it and reinstall it soon, just found out that my brothers pc has been severely dinted in the front, no one knows who did it. FML

You could probably just install over it.

that 5.5 second, 3 step procedure applies to any program launching at startup.

It's good to now.

It would have been far less hassle than uninstalling and re-installing the client.

FYI - stop posting useless memes in a thread as they add nothing to this conversation.

And yes, the installer has an option to auto start at boot, which you should never use. It actually causes some bugs with GPU folding. You should manually start it at boot and then you have much more control of what is going on. Just make sure when you re-install, you don't choose the "service" option.

Yes it runs on startup and folds until you tell it to stop. I realized that after many minutes of trouble shooting and de-overclocking :/

I find it more convenient to have it start up automatically for GPU folding because I can't get the Web Control to disable, even if I set it to false. When it starts up automatically, Web Control doesn't automatically open.
