Ergonomic keyboard vs Mechanical keyboard?

TallOne123
Go to solution Solved by Toddwjp,

why not both??

Good morning all of LinusTechTips,

Here with a little bit of a question. You see, I've been using this cheap-@ss keyboard for the past couple of years and it has served me very well. However, I realize that I cannot get all the girls with this cheap and dirty thing. I game and type a lot, so I was looking at mechanical keyboards with cherry mx brown switches, but ergonomic keyboards look really f'kin comfortable.

All things considered, can I get some advice on my next upgrade purchase? Honestly, any of the two would be a huge step up from what I have now but I don't want to get lazy and purchase whatever and miss out on some features I could have gotten with some extra research.

Get a mechanical keyboard; once using one for a few months I can't stand using the membrane keyboards at the CS lab, and even my mac's keyboard--which I've always loved is starting to get annoying to type on.

I even bought my mom a mechanical keyboard so I don't get frustrated because she is typing on a membrane keyboard.

What's an ergonomic keyboard? This?

Not really sure what you mean.

Anyway, if you are sure about your Cherry MX flavour, you should think about which features you would like to have:

Media keys?

Macros?

Backlighing?

Rubberized WASD keys?

And also what's your budget.

When you make your mind, find the mechanical keyboard that best fits your "needs" and get it. If you feel like you need, get a nice foam/gel soft arm rest but many keyboards already come with a good enough arm rest.

I'd go mechanical with a wrist rest, but if you're really concerned with ergonomics you might want to consider looking out for an ErgoDox kit from massdrop.com.

An ergonomic mechanical keyboard you build yourself:

They don't come cheap though! Be ready to spend around $250 for the kit with keys, and you'd need a solder to put it together. Not the easiest or most convenient way to get both the things you want, but it's probably the best one out there.
