Which HDD to buy!? *halp*

Go to solution Solved by WoodenMarker,

I guess I'll go with the red then =) Thank you for the fast answer! =)

EDIT: How fast do the RED drives spin btw? Aren't they 5400?

Depending on the specific drive, Reds operate anywhere from 5400, 5900, and 7200rpm.

you should go with a green cause red is for redundancy like raid and server solutions and the fail rate on those are high. i have a wd green and i newly bought wd black i don't feel much difference but wd black has a really long warranty :) Barracuda drives are like the pest they have a extreme high fail rate. this really made my choice easier when i bought my WD Black =D

Backblaze's results should be taken with a mountain of salt: http://www.tweaktown.com/articles/6028/dispelling-backblaze-s-hdd-reliability-myth-the-real-story-covered/index.html

The results are strongly skewed due to the batch of drives used and testing conditions.

I know that it is.. lol and these charts are old.. Anyway,I won't get the greens, now get over it.

Not only old but a very bad misrepresentation of actual reliability as well.

@13thNemesis Why isn't WD blue on your list btw? Can't go wrong with those.

WD Blues are capped at a capacity of 1TB and similarly priced while slightly slower than Barracudas.

So I'm buying a new HDD and I have to choose between:

Seagate Barracuda 1TB (ST1000DM003)

Seagate 1TB SV35 (ST1000VX000)

WD Caviar Black 1TB  (WD1003FZEX) (least wanted because it's quite expensive)

WD Red 1TB (NAS) (WD10EFRX)

I'll mostly use it for storage (music, movies and of course games), I have my OS on SSD.

Can I game with the WD RED?

Seagate barracuda = Cheapest with decent performance. Can have that barracuda tick though (That's luck of the draw, mine does not have it)

WD Black = Pretty fast but also pretty noisy without decent anti-vibration rubber grommets

WD Red = Again decent performance and 24/7 certified. Probably a bit slower than the barracuda but incredibly reliable. You can game on these

I don't recommend the SV35

Yep, 5400. I'd personally get the Barracuda. The Red isn't really made to be turned on/off every day.....

It's weird that you don't see a difference in perfomance O.o

What about the WD Blue?

Wht I wanted to show with my comment is that it is not a competition and GREEN is OUT of the question, so move along with the green drive please.

Any decent external hdd of your choice would do.

The Barracuda is a bit faster than the Blue. Other than that, the Barracuda comes in more sizes but that's about it.

I believe that Reds are either 5400 RPM (IntelliPower) or 7200 RPM (Red Pro).

For 5900 RPM you're probably thinking of Seagate NAS drives.

For 5900 RPM you're probably thinking of Seagate NAS drives.

I got the number from pcpartpicker and thought that it might have been correct since I've seen some Reds labelled as 5900rpm drives in some other places.

http://pcpartpicker.com/part/western-digital-internal-hard-drive-wd40efrx

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/06/17/seagate_gets_nasty/

6ec0b84a154f52ca78162706088d2d52.png

I looked up a few spcr readings where the rpm is discerned by the tone of noise produced and I don't see anything other than 5400 or 7200rpm.

http://www.silentpcreview.com/article1285-page5.html

http://www.silentpcreview.com/article1404-page5.html

http://www.silentpcreview.com/article1364-page5.html

It seems so far that it was just a repeated labeling mistake. I had thought that the 4TB Red might have been 5900rpm but it doesn't seem like so.

Intellipower is such a useful spec.. --what would we ever do without it?
