Too late to learn?

Kira0172
Go to solution Solved by Nuluvius,

You don't have any reason to doubt yourself and one is never too old.

My childhood and teenage years were truly awful. I was abused and severely bullied at school... There was only one thing I wanted; this was to be older so that I could get away, far away. When the time finally came I did just that, I ran as far away as possible and as fast as possible. I got a blue collar working class job when I was 15 straight out of that hell. The work was harsh and the pay was minimum but I was finally free so I enjoyed it for a long time.

It wasn't until I was 19 that I started to feel like there could be more for me. Mainly because all I could see was a dead end with little progression or change plus ones priorities also change as they age. In the interests of brevity, without digressing into the detail; this feeling lead me back to education by way of an Access to Computing course (lasting one year, Access courses were aimed at getting adults back into education). However it wouldn't be until I was in my mid twenties that I came upon my first real BSc degree and with it a diagnosis of Dyslexia and Dyscalculia. Despite this and my age I was amazed to be excelling in the Software Engineering field... I found myself employed in my second year and going full time upon graduation.

A short while later I progressed quickly through the industry and now have the pleasure to find myself working office hours in an enormous multi national corporation and other hours freelance. I am called nearly every other day by head hunters and agents... have picked up multiple other qualifications as well as a great many programming languages and technologies.

My world changed because I was willing to believe in myself.

I would encourage you to do the same because the journey is truly amazing.

Hey everyone

I am turning 17 in a month.

I have been wanting to learn programming or something like animating for about 3 years now, but for some reason I give up or get distracted doing other things. So I never really got far. I just know HTML, CSS and have some illustrator experience:(

I tried getting into java for android development, I got everything to work, set up android studio, ready to learn. But nope, I try finding a different language.. Maybe javascript? Nope, i want java. There are just so many things I can learn to develop, and the fact that I am (almost) 17 now, makes me believe that it's kind of already late to start learning something.

Is it? Are there any programmers, or animators that started late, but still have done projects and are experiences with the software/language?

Out of all the threads and posts I have read about what program language to learn(and not actually learn it) I think I will go with java as my first one, but I need to somehow do it, instead giving up ;-;

Thanks;)

OP saying he is too old.  LOL Yes it is true that as an adult for some it can be harder to learn what we didn't finish earlier with schooling but only because we have been out of school for awhile and even then that is kind of a lame excuse.  With the right help and direction an adult can learn again.  As for picking up skills a person can learn them at any age.  It just takes dedication and having a healthy mind still to work with.

Too many ****ing games!  Back log 4 life! :S

Most universities for software engineering expect you don't know any programming so you are definitely not too old.

It's never to late. Just pick up a programming language, learn all about that one. Switching to programming languages isn't to difficult once you know that first one, since most of them have the same concepts. Some languages great for starters are C#, python and javascript.

Once you know one programming language, learning other languages is extremely fast and easy. Focus on one you like, then everything else will be a walk in the park.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

You're not too old. Things are always going to need programming to make them run. Get in on it. The little time I was learning C# for school helped push me through class last semester. Just like how computers and machines need networking, they will need programs to run.

I started at 23 and have just passed 1 year mark. Best thing I've ever done. Java was my first language and can totally recommend it. Don't go android yet, can be a massive pain, just concentrate on core programming skills first.

I recommend getting a well rated textbook and just work through it. Doesn't suit everyone's learning style, but its worked great for me. Make sure you do the exercises too.

I went into a computer engineering program, having never programmed before. I'm now pretty good at it. No time is too late, IMO.

I think my dad said he learned at his first job, and he had a career in programming.
