Should I focus on CPU or GPU?

Go to solution Solved by airdeano,

Thanks for having me here .

I wont be using the build for professional use , but for light work. So having a budgeted build is most ideal.

problem is, just opening the CAD/Ps files you can build a quirky meh powered

system, but still will have lackluster performance in just opening files (again,

1GB Ps file with 50 layers of special filters will take a bit to open on a punnie

system and struggle on mighty systems).

using it as a preview system mild i5/E3 XEON and mid-tiered GPU. the iGPU

is fine for Acrobat, but the structuring of Ps and CAD would be excruciatingly

time-consuming (drive to In-and-Out burger and back and still waiting).

Hi, I will be building one tightly budgeted desktop . I will be using it mostly for opening PDF , photoshop and auto CAD . I wont be doing any editing on this desktop as it is for purely for opening files purpose . What I need is a computer that can open these files and others that are similiar to it very very quickly . I need to know which parts should I be focusing on .

My build will include these few items .

Cpu: Higher end i5 or entry lvl i7. (Need suggestion on AMD if it can get the same performance .)

Motherboard : mini-ITX board

SSD: Samsung 840 Evo 120gb

Ram: 8gb 1600mhz

PSU: 300w or  500w PSU . (havent decided on the brand yet)

GPU : Dont know whether I need a dedicated GPU or just using iGPU.

P.S: Sorry for bad grammer . Feel free to correct me . Thanks

Keep in mind, don't flip out on your PSU, if that fails, it could take down your whole system too.....

for a workstation build I would go for the entry level i7 and use the iGPU until you can get the money for a dedicated GPU for it.

You mean "cheap out"? Yeah, one should never do that.

I wont go cheap on the PSU . But I have not gotten to shop around to see which brand of PSU is cheaper for the build ,since I will be on tight budget . I will go for the larger brands like silverstone ,corsair and others.

a CX430 is cheap and it works fine, flipping out means don't screw around(i think) to me.

Keep in mind to see if it's a good one, you do not want to go with Diablotek as a PSU because their highly known of failing PSUs.

For the tasks that you would like to do (opening files, Photoshop, etc), a CPU would be more of what you want to focus on. Try to find a nice i5 or i7, but try to make your build an all around build, so also focus on the GPU as well. You can find a fairly cheep Nvidia GPU out there for <$100. Also, as others have stated, don't cheap out on your PSU ;).

@Involution

welcome to the Linus Tech Tips forums!

is this for professional needs or hobby needs?

for professional where time is money, for CAD/Ps (working with heavily ladened

layers and filters) you need powar!

shortcutting for $300-400 on a build, just costs you in the long run.

for hobbyists, it is always about the budget and where you can save in one area

only to pour it into another needed system.

I found out, get GTX 750 or GTX 750 Ti, you will be on par with K4000 GPU in this need, anything above won't give you serious performance boost.
