Go to solution Solved by Krzyimprt,

I don't live in the US, no.

I'm sure I could buy them as single purchase but then I'd have to build the entire thing myself and that was simply not worth it in terms of money, time, all the benefits from the store (such as complete warranty and "goodies") as well as risk of fucking it up because I've never built a PC.

But don't worry about them? So is it not *really* that important of a detail?

Thanks for your replies, by the way.

No, it honestly doesn't matter. If you're strictly gaming 2x4GB is more than enough.

Hello, so I'm currently looking into getting a new PC.

Currently my plans are:

Single GTX 980 (found out that it's pretty much overkill to sli this so I'll probably just get another in a year or 2 when it'scheaper and not so useless)
Intel i7-4790K Quad @ 4 Ghz (Hashwell-Refresh)
4x4GB G.skill Ripjaws Gaming 2133MHz
120gb SSD for OS and drivers.
etc.

So, the motherboard.

The store I'm buying from (And no, I'm not building it myself, I've looked into the individual prices here in the country and it's really not worth it) has the MSI Gaming 9AC which is a Z97, as the 'default'. For money that is equivalent of a video game I can upgrade to the ASUS Maximus VI Formula but my knowledge tells me that the VI Formula is a Z87? Is the VI Formula better despite being 'older'? I've heard it's better for overclocking but that's about it as the Z97 is obviously more open for future upgrade since it's the newer Z97 -- So which should I get?? I'm thinking MSI because it's newer and that will make the PC a little more "future proof" (inb4 "future proof isn't a thing", haha) but I'm also thinking the VI Formula because I hear that ASUS, in terms of quality, make vastly superiour motherboards and I'm thinking that by the time I'll be upgrading or getting a new PC, X99s will be cheaper anyway??

So which to go for?

Get the Z97

Z97 and Change your RAM to 2x8GB.. Am I the only one who cringes when someone buys 4x4GB or 4x2GB It makes absolutely no sense when all high end boards support up to 8GB per DIMM.

So which to go for?

Main: i7 2600 | ASUS P8Z68-V | 2x4GB Vengeance 1600 | GTX 580 | WD Blue 1TB | Antec TP-650C | NH U12S | W7 x64

Backup: X6 1090T | MSI K9A2 Platinum | 4x2GB XMS2 800 | GTX 550Ti | WD Blue 1TB |  Antec VP-450 | CM TX3 | W7 x64

Also, If anyone is knowledgeable about cases should I go for the NZXT Phantom 820 or the Corsair 520 Air?

I have zero issues with noise, I just want my PC to be cooled the best. (The NZXT is "one and half" video game more expensive, sticking to that analogue)

Get the Z97

Why?

I ask the same: Why? (Regarding everything you've said. Why the Z97, why the 2x8? Why do you cringe at 4x4? etc.) I ask to learn, not because I don't appreciate your answers!

No point in buying a z87 when z97 is out.. it supports both Haswell and 14nm Broadwell when they come out. 4x4 puts more strain on the memory controller by populating all DIMM's not to mention troubleshooting if you were to come across a bad stick.

But is there then any point in buying Z97 now that X99 is out? I just ask what I do because well I even end up uprading my CPU to something that could need Z97 or will I end up going to X99 in the future as it becomes cheaper, I don't know.

About the RAM, the only option they have is the 4x4. What kind of strain are you talking? Will it affect performance? Or are you talking physical strain? (I'm not very tech savvy)

I also heard MSI has poor quality control, which is also why I'm leaning towards ASUS despite it being older??

You must not live in the United States if your only option is 4x4. Don't worry about the RAM. There is no point in going to the X99 Platform unress you're always rendering videos ect. Stuff that can take advantage of 12+ threads.

Actually, the memory controller can handle a ton. The strain is mainly put on the DIMM itself, so getting several smaller sticks (4x4gb) would be the equivalent to getting 4x120gb SSDs in RAID 0 vs getting 2x8gb being the equivalent of 2x240gb SSDs in RAID 0. You're not going to physically see the difference, but the theoretical speeds are jaw dropping.

317 is watching. 317 is everywhere. 317 is life.

Product quality depends one where you are in the world but my mobo and GPU are MSI and I have no issues.

Literally nothing but 'entertainment' (i.e. gaming, movies, music etc.)

Thanks again for your replies.

Z87 doesn't support i7-4790k without BIOS update, which requires a haswell CPU. Avoid the hassle and get Z97. The overclocking comes down to the chip you get, not the motherboard. Also, for gaming all you need is 8GB of RAM. If the shop refuses to sell you 8GB of RAM, something is fishy.

I doubt they'd "refuse" -- It's just a quick call and they'll change it up, did so to get the 540 Air.

At that price range 16 to 8 really isn't going to cost me much, the price on 2133 RAM isn't that much (to me, at least)

I'm just glad I decided to not buy a PC that's about 40% the price with 5930k, X99 board, Sli GT980 etc.

I'll upgrade with an extra 980 when I actually need it.

What resolution are you planning on gaming or using?

I already decided on a PC but I'm currently using a 1080p but I'm going to upgrade to a 27" screen, they are 1440, yes?

But not 4k, if that's what you were going for.

It'll be fine then.
