My family needs to get a new camera, preferably a DSLR. Our current one is going to shit and our video camera, even though its only 3 years old, sucks ass at shooting videos. We need a camera that can fulfill these requirements inbetween the 500-600 cdn dollar range. Any suggestions?

$500 CAD

Exmor Sensor

E - Mount Sony Lenses. (And they sell adapters for the bigger lenses)

I recommend going to costco and getting either a Canon rebel SL1 or a T4i/T5i or similar Nikon (D3200 or 5200 iirc) and trying it out. You get 90 days and can get a real feel for the camera.

if video is important than I recommend the Canon t3i.  The Nikon d3300 or 3200 are also great cameras but Canon does video better.

I use a Nikon D5300 for video work in addition to still photography.

I do recommend reading though the begging of that thread though to decide if you actually need a DSLR or if a cheaper option will work for you.

Oops... (While the whole point was a SLR, minus the Lens and bulk)

Well. Technically most Sony cameras only have the Mirror for the light sensors.

And they are not going to be like professionally doing things.

But it still has an Exmor Sensor (What Canon and Nikon use) and flash, 1080p video, tilt screen, and changeable lenses. (And better processor and engine)

Nikon

D3100 and up or D5100 <-- you cab find the last gen ones for very cheap on kijiji. and they are almost just as good

these are very good DSLR for people who are starting out. and also come with a descant kit lens (18-55mm)

Canon

T3i or higher

just as good for photos as the Nikon. but much better for video because of things like mic input and more options to play around in the setting for video. but watch out because some of these canons don't have continuous auto focus while in video recording . but almost all nikon DSLRS have the Continuous AF.

do some research and post back here to get some opinions .

i got my nikon D3100 for less than $200CAD(from kijiji) with lens and a bag. and its as good as new. guy never used it. so you might be able to find something like that.

this is a good deal but if you are willing to spend that kind of money why not get a higher end last gen model. nothing much have changed since and nothing that you will actually feel.

try to find a used(in good condition) D5200 or somthing alone those lines. much better than the D3xxx series

Buy a last gen product?! Ew lol

Actually that's not a bad idea either although technically the D3300/5300 has a slightly better image sensor

Actually the sensor in the d3/5300 and the d3/5200 are the same.    The d3/5300 does not have a low pass filter and uses the expeed 4 processor.

The improvements in image quality and features are a result of the new sensor and removal of the low pass filter.
