Go to solution Solved by Deletive,

Yeah it possible. depends on the mods and resolutaion. 1080p with quite a bit of mods is around 3gb.

so once i get my new computer (i'm getting a gtx 970 in it) and i want to install a ton of mods but i'm just curios if its possible to get skyrim to use more than 4gb of vram

Toughest question ever lol... I know it uses more than 2gb if you have a lot of mod... but more than 4gb? Doesn't sound like it should xD

I doubt it uses more than 4gb... 4gb I still can believe but more than 4gb? no way...... just no way.....

but please correct my if someone has a good info on this

EDIT: lawl someone beat me to it... but yea.. at 1080p... it shouldn't

PLEASE QUOTE OR TAG (WITH @) ME IF YOU REALLY REALLY REALLY WANT ME TO REPLY!!!!!!!

For some reason i keep thinking Skyrim has a hard limit of 3GB usage on vram where it will crash upon using any more than 3gb. I don't know why...i think i read it a few times somewhere but i can't recall. All i do know for sure is that skyrim has a hard limit of 256 mods, any more and the game crashes.

Skyrim is a 32 bit application so it cannot use more than 4 GB total. But there is a mod called ENB that moves the copies of the VRAM content into an external process so Skyrim can use its limited meory for other things. It also preloads more things so your RAM get used better but the 4gb limit is still there. With higher memory usage Skyrim tends to crash quite often since Patch 1.9. You have to fix it with another mod called SKSE. Its intended as a script extender but it also has the feature to fix this bug when you tell it to. Unfortunatly it only delays the problem because the bug is in the code for the allocating of a new meory block. Everytime Skyrim has filled the first block of memory it tries to reserve more but in reality it just crashes. SKSE delays this by simply making the first block larger.

Edit: If you are just trying to use as much RAM as possible set the uGridsToLoad Variable in the Skyrim ini files higher. It will load much more things at once as this controls the full detail render distance. Dont do this with a savegame you want to keep though as it breaks MANY things like Quest scripts, physics, etc...

In order to do that, you would have to actually mod map and put like as many different models in one scene as possible with modded textures.

Skyrim can't use more than 4GB or run at more than 60fps (without breaking anyway). The former may be fixable with a mod or some kerjiggering of .inis but the latter is a pretty hard limit.

Skyrim with stock HD textures already take close to 3GB.  With mods mine takes over 4GB.
