Best HDDs for Gaming-Recording?

Go to solution Solved by Rheinwasser,

wd blacks would be best, but greens should be fine.

Hey there LinusTechTips community!

I joined the crew today because everything "computer-related" is my main hobby and I would love to learn much more!

I play Counter-Strike: Global Offensive & World of Warcraft and really enjoy recording and editing videos etc. Recording CSGO footage with my current setup is fine (since I can playback my clips etc instead of record all the time while playing wow) but for wow my hardware are too weak for my own standards.

But this thread is mainly for what harddisk is best for ONLY fraps storage use?

With my current income and budget I cant afford to fill my computer with SSDs etc and I dont got much experience with several types of harddrives.

Seagate's SSHD disks, any good for this type of use?

I have no problem recording fraps on my 7200rpm hard drive. If i record on my system drive it causes lag and you should not use fraps anymore.

My WD black 1 TB does a pretty good job at recording fraps footage at 2560x1440 :)

Really quick replies! Nice!

WD Black > Seagate's SSHD disk then? I am going for a complete Hardware upgrade before next WoW expansion releases (13.11.2014) but I am changing my HDDs before that because I've had my current ones for years and years and they've become really slow (Surprised they still are "alive" :D)

Try dxtory with lagarith codec, it might help you a lot because the bitrate is much lower.

Any spare HDD lol

I'm being serious... You don't need uber super fast and high rpm... just an HDD that doesn't have anything in it... so it can do it's own things...

For example -> you have 1 SSD (boot drive) and 2 HDD (one where you store all of your game/music/movies and whatsoeveryouwant! and then another one is just for FRAG's recording...) so now when you play the system of course will use the SSD since it's boot drive... and then it will also use your game HDD because obviously the game is in there... then nothing except FRAG uses the extra one... so it can spin and do it's own thing without bothering anyone/anything....

PLEASE QUOTE OR TAG (WITH @) ME IF YOU REALLY REALLY REALLY WANT ME TO REPLY!!!!!!!

Also if your issue is solved don't forget to mark the thread as solved!
Peace!!! from a random person in the tech's god forsaken land (named Finland or as I like to call it sarcastically FUNland)

I got a Samsung 840 250gb SSD for boot drive and are looking for the best possible option for my storage. I have no experience with SSHD disk and would like to know about them. Are they "special" in any way really? :P

SSHDs wont help you with recording, because they only cache frequently used files for faster launch.
