i5 4690k high and jumping temps.

Go to solution Solved by SkilledRebuilds,

Okay but it would act like when I first got it?

Also are idle temp spikes normal?

You need to worry less. (My Caps below are not Yelling, they are for emphasizing the point)

Idle spikes are normal for any and ALL CPU's...but especially BAD ON THAT COOLER, get a better one and the spikes will still be there, however not so high.

Currently IT DOES act like day 1 (just 5*c hotter) but that does NOT perform worse in any instance.

So worry less mate. Reapply your thermal paste (put a pea sized dot then let the pressure from the heat sink spread it)

Until you actually see error messages and BSOD (Blue screen of death and various errors) then don't worry and enjoy your games and applications.

Learn more about your PC's hardware via System Info applications,...reviews and youtube vids, expected performance and then when something goes wrong you'll have a better judge of what it may be.

A learning experience, although slow, still fruitful in later years.

Hello,

I a have a 4690k on the stock cooler (my h100i won't fit in my case waiting for the h440) and a msi z97 gaming 7.

I just recently changed the thermal paste from the stock Intel Tim to the noctua NT-H1.

This is how I did it:

I took out the cpu , cleaned it with a cloth and alcohol. Then I accidentally put my finger over the bumps on the back and some stock thermal goop went there and on the Mobo pins. I blew off the goop from the Mobo pins and now there seems to be none left, then cleaned the bumps with the cloth (paper towel) and alcohol geltly. After this I put the CPU back, then put on the noctua stuff. I spread it on with my finger over the CPU and then plopped on the stock hsf.

After this I got odd 50c (ambient 20-25c) in bios, ~50c idle windows, and ~75C in 100% load test.

The temps were jumping by 5C or more idle in bios, boot up, windows idle. Ex. 53, 55, 51, 58, 63, 52, all in 2 seconds...

OS: win 8.1 64bit

Is this normal, did I damage my CPU???

How can I fix this???

You may have applied to much thermal paste while replacing the TIM, it doesn't require as much you would use normally.

Although with the 4670K I'm pretty sure I idled at around 40C wit the stock cooler, and that was in 8-14c ambient, so maybe you are in the clear.

Also do not spread thermal paste, just plop the stock heat sink down right on top of a rice grain sized dob of it, the oil from your fingers as well as the spread method can create air pockets.

Okay, I will change it tomorrow, its late now and I'm out. Did I damage my CPU?

BTW nice name :P

Probably not, if you damaged your CPU it probably just wouldn't boot, or would be extremely unstable.

Okay, did I damage my CPU? By the bumps and the Mobo Tim spill? Also replacing and running these temps?

I'm really scared, that my CPU will never be the same again...

Doubtful you damaged your CPU at all, just runs a little hotter now which can be fixed by doing the thermal paste again.

Unless your into the 85-90*c in an instant, I'd not worry too much with 75*c being easily hit with my 4690 /w stock cooling in an instant got 72*c then pushed to 75*c,

I then got a Hyper212 @ low rpm's and I have not gone above 61*c since that few weeks ago.

Stated Again to sink in. Don't Spread it out once dolloped onto it.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

What about the spikes is this because of Tim?

Probably not, if you damaged your CPU it probably just wouldn't boot, or would be extremely unstable.

How would I see unstable? And If I fix Tims will it go back to normal?

So it seems to be bad Tim placement? After I fix it will my CPU 100% go back to normal and act brand new? (Its less than a day old only used 2 hours)?? Or will it be a bit worse and act odd forvever like my old athlon X2 5000+?

Constant crashing, overheating, etc. If you reapply the TIM properly yes it should be fine, just make sure and watch a few video from accredit people this time.

If you remove the cooler, remove the old paste, redo it with advice above.

Yes, it should be cooler.

You'll know its unstable when you get crash's and errors.

Your CPU would act like brand new whether it was 5*c hotter or not. (Remember diff people all over the world with different ambient air temps)

@Valhalla

It is unstable if it crashes for example. I think the temps will fix.

Okay, thanks, are idle temp spikes normal?

It's impossible to say but mostly likely it will return to normal if you do it right.

@Valhalla

I think so, the temps jumps as the chip is used. does not look broken to me at least.

Its 2 hours old. I just tried 3 games of bbf3 on stock tims, replaced the Tims and made a few mistakes as stated and now this... Will it go back to normal?

Thanks do much, you made my day :). Its really good to know I did not damage anything.

Again thank you.
