how hard will sata 2 hinder a ssd? 

i have a old x58 board that doesn't have a sata3 port and i'm looking into adding a ssd for os.

or should i just throw my money at a fast hdd

it will be limited to 300 MB/s read/write

so the only real limitation is the seq read and writes?

I use a SSD on my Sata 2 Laptop and my god did it make a difference. I can't really till the difference between my desktop (Sata3) and my Laptop (Sata2).

I was using my Crucial M4 on my old laptop (sata 2) and when I switched it into my desktop (sata 3) I didn't notice any drastic improvements--none that are obviously apparent. Any ssd on any system is pretty much equivalent in terms of actual use.

I have a X58 with sata 2 as well and bought a ssd and what a difference it is. It's way way faster than a regular HDD.
