Prime lens or Kit lens?

Go to solution Solved by DoubleY,

i actually did not think about the 35mm, wow thanks haha!

the one thing i read about the 50mm is that it can be a good lens for portraits. will the 35mm be as good as the 50mm for portrait photos?

On a crop body, yes. Because 35mm is 52.5mm on a crop body (D3XXX D5XXX D7XXX and a few others) whereas 50mm is more like 75mm.

50mm is considered to be the "0 distortion" focal length (or 35mm on a crop body)

Hi all, i'm deciding to sell my Nikon 18-55mm f3.5-f5.6 lens and thinking of buying a Nikon 50mm f1.8G instead. Would this be a good idea?

Seeing as i have a Nikon D5100 and is a crop factor, the standard format for the 50mm is going to be 75mm. The only reason why i want a 50mm is because BOKEHHHHHH (i mean, who doesn't love those?) and plus, i get to always shoot photos at f1.8 instead of f3.5-f5.6.

What do you think? Will the 50mm be worth it over the standard kit lens? I already have a zoom lens (55-300mm) so that's no problem. I could always purchase the standard lens again in the future if i wanted to.

Thanks again,

Sean.

I would prefer the 35mm 1.8 if you don't have anything wider then the 55-300mm

It's not worth it to sell your kit lens (because everyone has one) + you will mis the 18 - 55mm zoom ratio. I bought the f1.8 35mm a little bit cheaper and it does have the BOKEHHHHHH (pic related)

  • 2 weeks later...

ya go for the 50mm 1.8 or 35mm 1.8 both decent one is good for tight portrait and ones a street, tho one thing is the 18-55 isn't worth much so i think you will need to fork out a small amount of cash, unless you are planning to buy the prime's used.
