Calling all the folding experts.

Go to solution Solved by Whaler_99,

When I start folding the CPU will start its job but the GPU will stay at 0%, even though the status bar will say that it is folding. Anyways, I've decided to scrap that idea and fold on my main system; so no need to bug whaler.

I quite like the whole folding idea so maybe I'll build a dedicated system for it.

I have one question though, if I end up building a Folding system, what is better for folding: a strong cpu or a gpu?

Anyways thank you very much for your help :)

The 9800GT although technically is on the whitelist, I don't believe wlll get a valid WU anymore.

For lower end CPU's, like your Core2Quad, you could also fold using the Chrome app. I find they are quite good as that.

For a dedicated standard PC folder, GPU Folding is where it is at. Get a basic CPU and min ram and some decent GPU's...

After seeing many forum users with the pretty badges and after doing my research, I've now become interested in folding. Since I now have a new system, my old PC is now a door stopper. So I've decided to put my old rig to good use.

The only problem is that I don't even know where to start.

So I've come here for your help, since I've seen that lots of you have been folding for a long time.

Yes, I've read all the forum threads about "how to fold", but these threads just keep leading to others, and I don't know how to begin.

So...

1. How do I start folding?

2. What do I have to do to get those folding badges?

Thank you for reading and any help is very much appreciated :D

1. There's a link in my sig. It tells you what to do on the site.
2. You make one or you find one to use.

There's others that show your stats and you could probably find a generator by searching Google.

Interested in this as well.

people really make it out to be more complicated than it needs to be, all you do is download the program from the F@Home main site then you install it and run it, easy peasy, then you deal with the problems that may or may not arise, the slightly confusing bit is probably stats/passkeys/accounts etc, but that isn't needed to fold at all, it's just to have the work tied to you(and to get badges), which most people prefer, i know it might seem abit confusing, but honestly it's very simple when you get down to it, don't ponder just do it.

here is a link to download the software: http://folding.stanford.edu/#

here is an installation guide found on folding@home itself: http://folding.stanford.edu/home/guide/windows-install-guide/

here is a link to our sticky containing all of these links and more with various guides and whatnot: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/876-foldinghome-install-guide-and-links-linustechtips-team-223518/

here is another of our stickies explaining some troubleshooting, what a passkey is, work units etc.. :http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/1091-for-folding-users-tips-tricks-and-faq-updated-march-2014/

last one is a pretty big read so you might want to hit f3 or the corresponding key in your browser and search for key words you are looking for, or skim through it to get a general overview, you need to get started, then you can ask more specific questions afterwards.

their goal is to reach as many people as possible, so they haven't purposely made it more complicated than it needs to be, the starting process is simple while it also gives the more advanced user sufficient information.

Thank you so much kind sir. I am now folding 24/7 :)

Once I have my 21 work units completed, who do I talk to for the badge?

I'm not just doing this for the badge, but it sure is a nice bonus.

Thank you :D

hah, misread for a second there, i thought i saw "i'm just doing this for the badge" bleh i thought to myself :P

when the time comes send a Pm to whaler_99 and he will sort you out, remember to get a passkey and add it to your client for those bonus points, and don't forget to add our team number 223518.

you can check if you show up on our team statistics on folding@home main site or kakao stats.

Old rig isn't at all impressive and I don't remember all components so I'll list the basic:

Nvidia 9800GT (which won´t fold for some reason)

Intel core 2 Quad 2.66 Q6600 GHz 2.4ghz

6gb 1333mhz RAM

Conclusion: I though the rig could handle folding and I would just let it fold 24/7, problem is I can´t get the graphics card to fold, so it´s a very slow process and isn´t very productive.

Therefore I've decided to just let my main rig to fold (specs are in my signature)

that's strange, you did put the slider to full right? what does it do, does it simply not do anything or is it failing wu's, or perhaps it didn't download a work unit in the first place, as far as i know that card is still supported according to folding home page, @Whaler_99 will probably confirm if it should indeed work.

I shall be building a folding rig soon.

And thank you for contributing so much to the folding project which will help many (:
