New PC build need help with RAM

Go to solution Solved by VMaxMuffin,

Well future proof for me is 3-4 years, atm i have C2Q Q6600 clocked at 3.4ghz. And i have been running it for 7 years now. I only changed MBO-s cause the old one went to a better place xD .

My main problem is not how much ram, but rather what frequency and latency ram should i get.

RAM frequency/latency isn't generally that important. 1600 is fine, 1866 or 2133 tends to be the best value. Aim for CAS 9, but higher frequency means you can have higher CAS (I can't remember exactly why but basically the CAS is 'relative' to the RAM frequency, so essentially low frequency and low CAS is the same latency as high frequency and high CAS).

If you're talking about "future proofing", you're genuinely better off with buying 8GB now and getting a better GPU instead. Especially if it's primarily a gaming PC. It's much cheaper to add another 8GB in the future too if you need it than to upgrade your GPU. So

So I would say spend the least you can on 8GB of 1600MHz CAS 9, 1866MHz CAS 10 or 2133MHz CAS 11 (or less CAS if you can) that has a decent heat spreader, is from a decent brand and fits your colour scheme, then spend the rest of that money on getting the best GPU you can.

Hello,

i need some help choosing the best RAM for reasonable amount of money.
I have already chosen GPU, CPU and MBO, but my main concern is RAM. I have red on various sites faster ram lower CL and all kind of stuff and it is confusing.
All i know i want 8 or 16gb or just 8gb cause i game mainly. I want to overclock in near future so i want kinda future proof hardware.
Here is the link for the RAM i think that are going to be ok http://www.kingston.com/datasheets/KHX18C9T3K2_8X.pdf.
Here is chosen hardware:
CPU: i5 4690k
MBO: MSI z97 MPOWER
GPU: Sapphire R9 270x Toxic
PSU: XFX TS550W
SSD: Samsung 840 EVO 120gb
So this is basic setup, i have 150 dollars left in budget for ram. Can go bit higher :D  .
Thanks in advance.

No such thing as future proof, but if you can afford 16gb of RAM get it why not, if you can't 8GB will be fine for just gaming. I've got 8gb so far in my rig and still runs like a dream, so if you want to put the money towards another monitor or keyboard or speakers or something get 8GB and do that if you have everything else you need and still have 150 dollars left in your budget and can get 16gb of RAM you like. Get it.

Oh yea i want yellow and black theme, cause im sick of all black and red combo, and dont want any dragons flying in my case :D , and i already have the GPU.

I replaced my C2Q Q6600 this year haha! I loved that CPU. Sorry Vmax got it spot on though. Try get 1600HMz at CAS9 the higher the CAS the higher the latency but it's usually something you'll never notice in gaming. Get 8GB 1600, try and get a 280x/290 or something add that 150 to a new GPU. Sorry I didn't fully notice the GPU you'd selected.

I have already bought GPU like 3 months ago, i'm kinda stuck with it but then again i don't have full HD monitor atm so it is not that bad. Gpus were pricey here in Croatia, well all hardware is pricey here so i got what i could :)

OK you didn't make that clear that you already had it. It's not a bad card anyway, but you're still better off saving your money and just getting 8GB of RAM and adding more later if you really really need it (which I doubt you will, for a while at least).
