Do I need a anti-virus software?

OriginalPromise
Go to solution Solved by DoubleY,

I don't use them because I'm not dumb.

So I say no. I personally think Anti-Virus is for technology illiterate people.

I'm using an anti-virus software, but it frequently checks for viruses therefore eating up my disk response time.

Should I disable the feature yet keep the software or erase it completely?

The software is called "Alyac" which has a massive market share in South Korea, and is completely free.

http://asia.alyac.com/

It's not malicious in any way, but do I really need an anti-virus software if I only download content from trusted services?

As long as you're not doing anything stupid (read: torrenting a ton of stuff) then you should be fine without it or just something like Malwear Bytes

You should be able to disable automatic disk checks, I'd never go without at least one anti-virus program.

Use malwarebytes or just disable the scans.

You don't need to be dumb to get a virus.

Do you check your URL every time you access a website to make sure all the characters are perfectly correct? If not, you should probably use an antivirus.

Windows firewall counts as an antivirus, so if you have that enabled don't say you're not using an antivirus.

All it requires is commonsense when clicking stuff. Simple as that.

I haven't had a virus in 2 years.

How? Don't download shady stuff or pirated materiel.

Its possible to get viruses without downloading them...

It is possible to set up a fake website with the same URL as a very popular website except with one different character. Then the website can collect your IP for tracking or other illegal purposes. Browsers can also download files in the background without you knowing, and they can also run scripts specified on a website.

If the only website you visit is LTT then you don't really need to worry, but accessing new websites always has a risk even if it seems legit.

Not once has that happen to me in two years.

So I guess I'm "lucky" if you don't think it's just commonsense.

I always considered the antivirus argument to be pretty similar to the seat belt argument. Yes, I'm sure you have plenty of common sense when it comes to driving/surfing the internet. But it's the actions of other assholes out there that can f**k you up.

Be smart, and you don't need one. I've Jack Sparrow'd a lot of stuff in my time, and i haven't had a virus in years.

Shot through the heart and you're to blame, 30fps and i'll pirate your game - Bon Jovi

Take me down to the console city where the games are blurry and the frames are thirty - Guns N' Roses

Arguing with religious people is like explaining to your mother that online games can't be paused...

It's rare to get a virus really as long as you are careful and use common sense. This doesn't mean it cannot happen, there is always a risk, and that is why people use antiviruses.

So really you aren't lucky, but rather you haven't been unlucky :)

Personally, I have a lot of important data on my PC which I do not want to risk loosing, so I use an antivirus just in case. I have it to not run scans unless I ask it to, and only checks new files that are downloaded or installed. So this way it doesn't affect my PC's performance, and still offers a layer of protection that my router or browser firewall cannot always provide.
