not primary HDD in BIOS but not Dick Manager or Windows 8.1
no harm setting to IDE mode
and see if CSM was enabled
I set to IDE and it repeatedly went into Windows 8 repair, or the "something went wrong booting up" page. So I've now switched back to AHCI and it is staying on the motherboard loading screen.
EDIT: I don't know how but once the motherboard had stalled at the loading screen I hard booted and it brought up the "something went wrong booting up" page again, so when I restarted it went into Windows 8 recognizing the new drive media. I dont know what changed but it is back in AHCI now with no changes in settings.
EDIT 2: so during that whole mess I switched the SATA cable out (and left it routed) for a more accessible one and assumed that solved the problem, so when I go to reroute the cable in a better way (less sharp corners) and it is all smooth I run again and it has the same problem. Trial and error led me to switch to another sata port and that one worked (which meant it worked after using the test cable too). So I dont know why that caused an issue but it works as a solution.
