Is my 500w PSU enough for R9 280X? Recommendation pls.

Go to solution Solved by Megazero,

I have this Silverstone SST-ST50F-ES it has 500W PEAK but 408W continuous.

After I do some research, I found out that MSI R9 280X 3G has 370W under load wattage

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2013/10/28/msi_r9_280x_gaming_video_card_review/10#.U6_rNvmSwo0

So, I do some basic math if I use 4690K and 280X and 50 W for MOBO, SSD, RAM, and FAN, then full wattage would be 102 W + 370 W + 50 W = 512 W

These are my configuration.

This is my first time building my own rig.

I'm not planning to do overclock soon but maybe in the future.

My questions are

1. Is this build going to work?

2. Are there any noticeable effect during normal usage or playing intense game?

3. Will it harm my other components for prolonged usage?

4. Should I buy 600 W power supply or more?

5. What is the cause of smoking power supply?

Sorry for my bad english. Thanks.

1. Yes it will

2. What do you mean?

3. Nope~

4. While 500W is enough, it kinda cutting it close to yeah, I'd like a 600W instead

5. Never happen to me... I do have one just die cause of old age but it didnt smoke or cause any damage to anything else.

Did you already purchase all these part? since you dont really need a 250GB SSD for gaming, 120GB is enough, and if you cut it down you can get a R9 290 instead?

If I were you, I would get at least a 600W PSU, because that way, you don't need to worry about the components power. Plus, if you went even high in wattage, you could have more flexibility for adding other components.

is there any noticeable effect when playing intense game if I used this psu and then suddenly it might crash something like that?

do you have a configuration which has less power supply than required before?

actually what will happen if I run an intense application or game and the power supply is slightly below the requirements?

have you tried once? does it crash or something?

Well it might happen like that, to be honest 500W should already be enough, it just that ppl (including me) dont like cutting it so close like that :P So np for you. And there's no real way to drop anything so the power require can be any lower.
