"Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We're just collecting some error info and then we'll restart for you."

Go to solution Solved by MrTomnus,

If you open up the BIOS and try to change the settings in there, there might be some settings concerning USB or Windows 8. For example, my BIOS has a setting for Windows 8 Fast Boot, among other things (I'll restart my PC and take a pic in a minute). These kinds of settings could cause compatibility issues. See if there are any for your motherboard's BIOS and change them :)

@Shaxi - here are pictures

This will be slightly different for your bios, but go to settings

And there might be options for USB configuration

Try changing some of these settings and rebooting.

Or like @Whaler_99 said, if you don't have a legit copy of Windows, that could be a problem :) And failing that you would need to reinstall the image on another flash drive and see if you get the same problem. Then We'll know if it's your PC that's the problem or not :)

Hello!

Today I tried to install Windows 8.1 for the very first time on my main rig (i5 3570k, 16 GB DDR3, GTX 770...) onto my 120GB OCZ Agility 3 SSD from a flash drive.

However, as soon as I see the Windows logo after booting from the flash drive and the circles have moved a few laps, I get the message in the title for a half a second, saying "Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We're just collecting some error info and then we'll restart for you." And it keeps doing this until I power the computer down myself.

I am in desperate need of help, so if anyone knows what to do to resolve this, please let me know.

Thank you in advance!

Shaxi

did you overclock the system? did you reset the bios? is ahci enabled for your ssd?

Hey :)Can you please post the specs of your computer, it would help us out a lot in figuring out your problem. Tell us what you did during the install - did you pick any custom options?

Also don't you think it's creepy how the PC says "we"? It creeps me out, it feels like someone's watching me

Edit: Whoops I'm an idiot and can't read.

Only advice I can offer is try booting up in safe mode. You can do this by spamming F8/F9 after the BIOS screen. If it boots then, let us know.

It is not currently overclocked. I cleared the CMOS, which should do the trick. :) And AHCI is on.

Sorry about the double post, We posted at the same time :P

Well, let's see

Case: Fractal Design Define R4

PSU: XFX Pro Series 650W

Motherboard: AsRock Z77 Extreme4

RAM: Kingston HyperX Blu 4 x 4 GB @ 1600 MHz

SSD: OCZ Agility 3 120 GB

HDD #1: Seagate Barracuda 2 TB

HDD #2: Samsung SpinPoint F3 1 TB

CPU: Intel i5 3570k @ stock speed during installation

GPU: Gigabyte Windforce GTX 770 2 GB

What I did was I inserted the flash drive, booted and went into BIOS and set it to the boot device. I then rebooted, let it go ahead and as it is about to start, it just crashes into the error message mentioned afore.

Okay, so you haven't got around to installing the OS yet? That would be a problem with your flash drive. Try putting it in a different USB port on the PC - make sure it's plugged into the back. If that doesn't work you might have to try another USB drive if you have one around - perhaps you didn't format it properly? But it boots into Windows, just, so that's unlikely...

Precisely. I'm not getting into the actual setup, I just see a few seconds of the loading screen and it goes away. Hmm there's no harm done in trying different ports, I guess. But it seems rather unlikely.

EDIT: As suspected, nothing really changed by switching to another USB port.

Yes, it's odd, but some ports have higher priority etc. And like you said there's no harm done. We need to try and eliminate as many variables as possible. Hope it works :)

Quick question - where did you get this copy of Win 8.1? As in, is it a legit copy or something you got from a torrent? If so, the image could be bad... Tried another USB drive?

The latter. Nope, haven't tried another USB drive. I'm gonna try and see if the same thing happens with Windows 7 or not, then I'll know for certain.

Good! Just remember that once the OS is installed you turn rapid start technology back on, but only when you've downloaded the drivers for it! It'll make booting and waking from sleep a bit faster :)
