[Help] Very Confusing Case Fan Situation...

You're supposed to measure across the side of the fan and not diagonally across it.

Hi guys, I need some help finding out what fan I need to put in my system. I have a HP A6847C, and I want to buy a new exhaust fan for it. I opened up the computer and I measured the exhaust fan to be five inches, or 120MM. I put that into Google, and I found out that it is 127mm.

I bought a 120MM case fan from Newegg a couple weeks ago to find out that it is way too big for my chassis. I triple checked the size of the default case fan, and it's five inches from corner to corner.

I am very confused. Am I missing something, or do I just suck at measuring?

Here's a picture of the fan: uaKtEU0.jpg?1

Welcome to the world of OEM computers.

That rear fan looks like a 92mm to me but i can't really tell because there isn't much to base that on.

My apologies about the picture, it's the only good picture I had of the fan.

Thank you! I was told to measure from corner to corner, but whoever I heard that from was wrong.

I measured it, and it was 90MM.

Anyone know if this is a good fan? I would like something with LED's, but this was the only one I could find.

The most important thing is that you get enough airflow.

The fan that's already in the case should have a serial number on the sticker. If you run searches for that number you should hopefully be able to find out how much air it's moving. You should match or exceed that airflow for safety sake, otherwise your system might overheat.

I ran some searches and found an ultra quiet 90mm fan with blue LEDs but there's a good chance it might not move enough air to keep your system properly cooled:

http://www.moddiy.com/products/PCCooler-Ultra-Silent-90mm-Blue-LED-Black-Fan-(18-dBA).html

The others I found are all 92mm so you'd have to do a little investigation to find out if it'll fit your machine, although I'd imagine it would (just not sure if 90 and 92mm fans are set standards with differing form factors in terms of the positioning of the screw holes, since I've never really used them).

This one looks pretty cool (Edit: it just occurred to me that what you need for your case is a fan to extract air, and the CoolJag programmable fan has the wording projected through the clear fan-blades so that they're visable from the side that would need to be facing into your case, which means it's probably not such a great choice for your needs) I don't know how easy it is to program it but it looks pretty cool (the one in the video is an 80mm fan but there's a 92mm version)...

Another 92mm: Thermaltake make a blue LED fan: http://www.thermaltakeusa.com/ttWWW/Product.aspx?C=1166&ID=1951

But definitely the most important thing is to get adequate airflow for your system, which means getting a fan that will push as much or more air than the stock fan that came with the case. Run a search for the serial number on the sticker on the stock fan to track down how much air it's moving.

There's a green 92mm LED case fan here (almost all of the other ones I've found are blue)...
