NCIX: n/a
Amazon: http://georiot.co/30oN

The G3 from LG is the first phone I've used with a 2560x1440 display. That's a lotta pixels! Not to mention the rest of the top-of-the-range specs!

Please note that they are retail units (in the video I said pre-production, but this has since been changed) and they are Korean unlocked global units, so you will need to verify if they will work correctly on your carrier! To my knowledge they will work on AT&T or T-Mobile, but I got no data - only get voice and SMS on my carrier (Bell) so YMMV.

Either way you can still enter to win one, and you an always use it as a portable gaming device or whatever... I mean, it's a G3 man! The wifi will work! Best of luck to everyone!

One entry per household.

The giveaway is worldwide and closes July 6th and the winners will be announced on Twitter, so make sure you're following @LinusTech!

SPONSOR MESSAGE (please read)

HTC has been making massive waves with their HTC One Android smartphone, and while unfortunately we are not able to bring you any HTC Ones in this giveaway, the available options are absolutely rockin'. My wife has been using a DROID DNA for quite a while now, and with its S4 Pro processor and gorgeous 1080p screen it is a head-turner in spite of, or perhaps BECAUSE of the fact that most people don't recognize exactly what phone it is, particularly here in Canada.

TLDR: HUGE thanks to HTC for making this giveaway possible. You guys freakin' rock and the support you're showing for our brand new community is overwhelming!

so this one time I was hanging out with my friend who is the manager at a tech shop by where I live and a girl comes in and buys a 2tb hard drive. we let her know that we install hard drives for $1 (the cost of the sata cable we use) and she says "just because I am a woman does not mean I cant work on computers" and leaves in a huff. two days later she comes back in saying that the HDD is not working so we take the computer in to look at it, we open it and the HDD is nowhere to be seen, so we ask her where it is. and it turns out that she scanned it and put the scanned image on her desktop to install the drive. and to top that off she threw away the drive she paid almost $200 for and she wanted us to give her a new one.

#1008116 LinusTechTips Website? Is this going to be a thing?!

Posted by dezeltheintern on 07 November 2013 - 05:32 PM

#Yoloha, wanted to just tweet this but Linus is making me use the forum for some reason.

This is just a mockup but ultimately contains the content we'd like to have on it. The design is still in progress though we're liking it so far.

The news and trending topics content will be pulled from the forum. 'The Headlines' will be content created by volunteers from the forum and will link to posts, though they may be formatted differently to accommodate the style. The Twitter feed section will be tweets from the crew and maybe others from the community when using a specific hashtag.

This will be a landing page and will not replace the forum. In fact, it will rely heavily on the forum as most of the content will link to the forum.

#1870831 Prepare yourselves, the three new behemoths of nvidia are here

Posted by brownninja97 on 15 April 2014 - 11:37 AM

*cough* a follow on from this*cough*

This is really great news, and its not a repost goml @KakaoDj .

So this wasnt expected, im surprised by the specs, the architecture is crazy, they barely use any power.

When i saw the amount of cuda cores, memory and clocks i lost it.

But they are here, brace yourselves.

Put on some dramatic music

Give it up for the

GT 705

GT 710

and lastly

the

GT 720

Boosting the uncanny arcs of Fermi and Kelper

Relying on the joys of rebadging.

This is a great moment indeed.

This day should become a international holiday(even though its easter holiday already for some people)

Well then what the **** are we waiting for better dive in.

First up the gt 705

c93_GF119-300-A1.jpg

This sexy thing is a rebadge of the gt 610 which was a rebadge of gt 520. spicy.

Let me throw some numbers at you

  • 48 CUDA CORES
  • 64 BIT MEMORY BUS
  • a jesus tier of only 29watts under full load
  • An awesome process size of 40nm

If i was you id wait for the classified or lightning versions of this card, you could maybe push it up by 1000mhz.

Next up the...

GT 710

c572.jpg

This lady killer isnt a rebadge of the of Gt 620, whats this madness, its a rebadge of the gt 630, actually no its not, this is a cut down gt 630, madness is it, whatever.

Lets get down to the stats

  • Uses the genetically superior pci-e gen 2.0 lane.
  • supports DX 11
  • has 512mb of memory, wait a sec thats less then the 705, i guess the AMD marketers went to nvidia for a day.

Thats all i can say about that card, I recommed you wait for a sapphire version, even though this is nvidia im sure a 8gb vram version will be arriving soon after launch.

LASTLY

the new god('s servant),

the new flagship(mascot),

Here it is the GT 720

c572.jpg

This you might notice is the same as the above card but its superior.

Its not a half rebrand, ITS A FULL REBRAND.

This card has a full 1gb of vram. If you convert that to bytes its 1.0737 X 10^9 which is a big number, if you tried to count to that number it would take... A LONG TIME.

Unlike the ferocity of the above cards, this one is on a whole new level, those cards have a straightly 1 smx unit whereas this dragonslayer has 2 smx units. THATS 200% THE PERFORMANCE, i think.

It also has the DNA of the gtx titan, the 680, 770, titan black, titan brown, every voodoo card and that crazy tall guy from fractal.

Well then its been great but thats everything ive got today lads, follow EVGA's step up plans because im sure you titan wielders will be gunning for one of these beauties soon.

Thanks so much for joining. My vision is a community based on positive member interaction and helping each other. I believe that if we all work together toward this goal, we will have success in the long run. We don't have official forum rules or anything like that yet, but as long as everyone is respectful of each other, and patient with the growing pains that we are going to experience (vBulletin 5 is VERY beta right now) we can make this into an AWESOME community forum. #117064 My Story - How I Became A "professional Unboxer"

Posted by LinusTech on 25 April 2013 - 10:35 PM

Sorry for the re-post. This forum section kinda died when we migrated and this post was lost, but I link people here a lot when they ask me this question.

I get a lot of questions on YouTube, but some of the ones that come up a lot are

"How do I get companies to sponsor me with products?"
"How do I get more subscribers on YouTube like you?"
"What do I need to study in school to do a job like yours?"

Hopefully this story of my journey serves as both an encouraging and cautionary one.

I was in high school when I really got into computer hardware. In Grade 11/12 and in my first couple of years at the University of British Columbia I spent most of my time tinkering with my computer, hanging out on hardware forums and playing video games. Honestly that's a big part of why school didn't really go well for me at the post-secondary level. I didn't devote enough time to my studies and I was on academic probation after having failed first year calculus twice when I made the decision to drop out and switch from working part time at my local computer store to a full time position.

I started at NCIX by working just weekends, then I moved my school schedule to Monday/Wednesday/Friday, and I was working Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday at NCIX. When I left school I switched to being a full time sales representative at the Langley store. I worked like that for a few months, then I had to leave NCIX due to a contractual obligation that I had to work for a different employer during the summer that year. I went to the President of NCIX with a request that once I was finished my other contract that I be allowed to have my job back, and instead of giving me my job back he explained that I was selling more high end gaming systems than any other sales person in the company and offered me a position at head office taking care of the system configurations on the website. I was thrilled.

I finished my other job and went back to NCIX to build high end systems and make sure that the computers on the website were compatible and up to date. I wanted to do more than just buckets of parts for our systems though and at that point one of the best ways to differentiate was liquid cooling. In order to achieve my goal of building liquid cooled systems, I had to have access to the right components. That was when I asked my boss why the heck NCIX didn't have any selection of custom water cooling parts. He basically said "I dunno. If you want them, you source them." So I did.

In a span of about a year NCIX went from selling no water cooling components at all to being #1 in Canada with every significant water cooling manufacturer (Swiftech, CoolIt, Thermochill, EK Water Blocks, D-TEK, Danger Den, Koolance, you name it). Once I'd demonstrated that success it was time for me to graduate to managing some real lines. I went from taking care of random widgets to core business components like SSDs, RAM, motherboards, and networking. Over time my responsibilities shifted and instead of being the one placing orders daily for everything, I was given support from other team members to focus on marketing and promotional campaigns.

Times changed, people changed... I glanced at the calendar and realized a few years had passed me by and all of a sudden I was a Category Manager rather than a Product Manager, with a team of Product Managers reporting to me, and I was heavily involved in strategy and marketing for key categories like CPUs, notebooks, video cards, SSDs. I was also still product managing some lines, and I was still overseeing the PC system configurations & marketing as well. I was overloaded and it was time to delegate and step back a bit. I also knew that my baby was coming soon.

When the baby was born, my pace didn't really slow down. That's what happens at a vibrant, fast-growing company. There is always some exciting new project to work on, or a new stretch target that you're motivated to hit.

That long story (hopefully not TLDR) leads me to the answer to all of those questions above: GET A REAL JOB. What you may or may not have noticed is that nowhere in the blurb above did I say anything about making videos. YouTube videos are not a real job unless you are incredibly talented, incredibly hard working, or incredibly lucky (usually some combination of the three) and honestly it's not that lucrative.

If you have fun making videos and you're passionate about it, do it as a hobby, but don't expect to get any free products or money for doing it. That way if you break out and gather a huge following, then that's awesome, but if you don't then you hopefully enjoyed every minute of that too. The audience isn't stupid. They know who is doing it for $$ and who is doing it out of passion, so ask yourself if you have the passion to make videos even if no one watched them. If the answer is no, then it's like that no one will be passionate about watching your videos either.

I don't have any relevant pictures or videos to link to, so instead I'll post a link to the first video I ever uploaded to YouTube about the Sunbeam Tuniq Tower. It should give you some inspiration because if THAT guy can build one of the largest tech channels on the YouTubez by working hard, being passionate, and having some good luck, then maybe you can too!

#152038 Custom Water Cooled Desk - 56k warning. Lotsa Pictures! *Now with Table o...

Posted by PBaines on 06 May 2013 - 06:51 PM

what we first start off with is making some guideline holes so that we are able to do better cuts with the jigsaw allowing us to change angles easily.
20130207135502.jpg

Mid way cutting.
img5762e.jpg

now time to lay it on, and all is good.
img5764a.jpg

a wild cat appears! "hmmmm, can i fit through here?"
20130113162925.jpg

"Why yes! of course I can!"
20130113162932.jpg

marking out the other side, and repeating the process
img5783t.jpg

20130207135440.jpg

both sides have been completed and look very nice. they are BOTH yet to be routered so that the grill sits in flush. but that is next days off job.
img5789v.jpg

I quickly decided that I would do my 5.25" holes, one for a Blu Ray drive (basically just incase i need it for whatever case. And no, I couldn't be bothered getting a USB one), and also will be fitted with a Fan Controller too.
Here is the plan...
img5784n.jpg

Holes done
20130207141743.jpg

all cut out
201302071945572.jpg

with a bit of extra little rasping (wood equivalent of a file) they fit nice and snug! Though like the rad grills. Will router a recess for them to sit flush in. If some may notice, the drives are sitting lower then centre, this is because I will probably put my power/reset buttons above the 5.25" area.
and ps, yes I know the middle piece between each 5.25" slot is weak as hell, and I understand that. If it breaks it breaks, if it doesn't it doesn't! it looks nicer with it though
img5788a.jpg

Oh, and this is the glass installed
easy to remove to, simply put fingers between the two glass sheets and lift the top one up! the front bit is siliconed in place
img5782w.jpg

Next update will be Wednesday of everything routered
and then theres only two holes left to do (PSU, I/O shield) and its time to d-d-d-d-d-drop the hardware in!!

Here is how I will be spacing my UP7 to the desk itself. just a few rubber spacers, that will be screwed into the desk, will have to go find some nice long thin srews while I think about it!
IMG_5791.jpg

We start with the routering of the 480 grill rebate, so that the grill can sit nice and flush
IMG_5793.jpg

The middle bits had to be done also, and were very difficult too as after a few cm's the router wasn't sitting flush anymore so would 'dip' as you can see in the picture where it dipped a little bit. but that's okay! it's not seen
IMG_5794.jpg

Thinking about how I could find a packer to use that allowed an extra bit of width... duh, why not use the template to rest the router on!
IMG_5796.jpg

IMG_5798.jpg

Now, this is what it looked like! the rebate for the grill was done, and also i further rebated in a rectangle for the actual little hex-hole grills to sit in too
IMG_5967.jpg

Then there was about a 2 week period where I did nothing in life but work/sleep. UNTIL my parts arrived! and I will also be getting another GTX 680 4GB too

IMG_5910.jpg

After thinking and googling, I figured a way that I could mount my power supply tidily, by making a metal template I guess you'd call it. where you would screw the thin sheet steel to the desk so you could then be able to screw the psu in!
IMG_5928.jpg

IMG_5929.jpg

IMG_5930.jpg

And then there she was. the template to cut out the... template :B
IMG_5931.jpg

Mid way cutting it out, realised I shouldn't have cut the paper up so much as it was so hard to get the small rectangle square again!
IMG_5932.jpg

IMG_5933.jpg

And there it is. Not the tidiest and 100% most beautiful, but it will be painted, not seen. It will serve the purpose it was made to do _b
IMG_5934.jpg

Time to mark out where the IO shield will be put, and also where my PSU hole will be too.
IMG_5935.jpg

Time to do my preliminary guide holes for the jigsaw
IMG_5936.jpg

And there it is, all nice and square!
IMG_5962.jpg

The PSU Template works well too
IMG_5961.jpg

Now, the one thing that bugged me the most... The PCI holes. How do do them? Do I rebate them? Do I cut out one big hole instead? I will do it individually instead and rebate me thinks..

I then proceeded to use the smallest router bit I had and rebate the groove for the PCI brackets to sit in.
Also, the top L piece of the bracket needed somewhere to sit in, so I marked the lowest point the bracket could sit, otherwise the card when in the motherboard will be on a lean and could have a dodgy connection to the PCI/E Lane

Making sure my depth was correct, I used a test bit of wood to make sure that when it came to the final piece, it was done properly.

A Perfect fit!

Just a FYI, to prevent any scratching this is how I lay the top down to do any cutting/routering etc
IMG_5946.jpg

Now that the first PCI slots had been cut, it was time to finish the rest off
IMG_5948.jpg

Here is how I measured the spacings for where the slots went, just an old case I chopped up!
IMG_5949.jpg

All cuts done

Next, to square all the holes out I figured, what better way to do that, than with a Router! Least that's what I thought. The insertion of the bit went well, as soon as I itched it to the right BOOM. the middle piece of the PCI slots just snapped off.. I said a naughty word beginning with F. the next one began with C. hehe
IMG_5951.jpg

It was time to resort to Plan B. Cut the whole damn thing out and chop the PCI bracket bit out of that old case that was in the pic above
IMG_5952.jpg

it looks a lot tidier this way anyway, so while I am not happy the slot snapped out, I am happy with the result I guess!
IMG_5959.jpg

So after cutting the PCI Bracket out, i gave it a quick sand and a quick paint with orange and will continue to polish it up over the next week but just wanted to test it out for the time being to make sure all was well... Guess I was just impatient and wanted to see if when everything was laid out in the desk it would all look pretty is more appropriate

After the day, I moved everything to it's little box. and covered it. Until tomorrow
